Defender of the downtrodden, husband, dad, artist, lover of nature and plants -- mensch

Mickey was born in Minneapolis, MN on October 06, 1927 - the youngest of 3 brothers to Rose and Ben. A first-generation American citizen, he dedicated his career to providing legal services to those who needed but could not afford it, improving the American judicial system, and raising us, his family, with Sheree.

WW2 interrupted Dad's dream of becoming a landscape architect, but he lived out his passion creating beautiful gardens for our family and later as a docent at Torrey Pines State Reserve and Quail (now San Diego) Botanical Gardens. His happy places were with his family and grandkids, at the beach, leading educational hikes on the cliffs of the Pacific Ocean, and propagating plants in the potting sheds at Quail.

When you next visit Torrey Pines, stop to enjoy the view and think of him -- and look for a bench there in his honor.

Dad was a mensch, a man of no pretense or swagger. He just knew who he was. His sly sense of humor enlivened our lives and shaped our world views. One of his catch phrases, which encapsulates Jewish fatalism and the 40s when he was a teen, was "Well this is a revolting development!" borrowed from the character Boots Riley on the radio serial "Life of Riley".   He might say that about this essay, in fact.
